What Is the Public Cloud?

The Public Cloud

What is the Cloud?

The first thing you need to understand is, the cloud is a concept, not something that is physical or tangible by itself. Anytime you put something “on the cloud”, like a file; you’re realistically storing it in a physical and very tangible space.

The cloud is many of those physical spaces, usually many networked servers that essentially share your data between them so that if your particular server becomes inaccessible, your data could still be accessed.

In the past, you could only interface with what you had directly in front of you. Cloud Computing isn’t really a new concept, but the ability to access and manipulate anything you have on the cloud from any location at anytime is quickly changing the business technology world.

So what are the benefits of using the cloud?

The cloud is so much more than just a collection of networked devices. Companies used to have to buy and worry about purchasing and running their own hardware, even though the value of the hardware quickly deprecated over time. With the cloud, businesses around the world only have to pay for the resources and space that they use. The cloud makes it easy to scale physical requirements up or down since data can be moved so fluidly between the networked devices.
